The Wey Navigations
History in the Making

The two Navigations have provided unhindered access for commercial and leisure boats along twenty miles of the river for over 350 years. Their construction not only changed the fortune of the whole valley, but also acted as a catalyst for the development of canals throughout the whole country. Much of the valley's heritage is directly linked to the history of the waterway.

Here we provide you with a quay from which to start exploring the Navigations. Scroll down for some ideas on where to go.

WEY HUMOUROUS
“I grew up near the the river, and spent many happy hours there. Before they altered the course of the river it would flood regularly three or four times every winter. My Dad used to say " In the Summer the river was at the bottom of the garden, and in the winter the garden was at the bottom of the river". Sheila Robinson, January 2007

WEY VALLEY FOOD
OVER THE CENTURIES
“An excellent Cattchup”
Loseley (Guildford) 17th century Recipe
An excellent Cattchup Mrs. Southhall gave me for fish sauce, or any other sauce to put a little in. Take a quart of port Wine, half a handful of Horse Radish Roots cutt small, the same quantity of Parsley Roots cutt small, a quarter of a pound of Anchovies, as much black pepper pound’d fine, as will lye on half a Crown, let it Simmer all together over the fire, till it comes to a pint then strain it off – & bottle it, & cork it well for keeping, a little of this put into melted butter according to your own taste, makes exceeding good fish Sauce, you may warm it in the butter or not as you like – a little of this put in any other Sauce makes it very good.
