The oak trees throughout the park provide an important habitat for rare insects, and fallen wood is left to provide a natural resource. The grassland of the park is carefully managed to prevent scrub from taking over and involves mixing grazing and haycutting.
Close to the castle itself parkland has been put over to sports usage and includes football pitches, a cricket pitch and an 18-hole public golf course.
